History
Oh Henry! launched in 1920, the same year as Baby Ruth, and predated Snickers by a full decade — making it one of the true pioneers of the multi-component candy bar format. The combination of fudge, caramel, and peanuts in milk chocolate was a more complex flavor profile than most contemporary bars, and it found an immediate audience. The origin story of the name is a piece of Chicago candy lore: a young man named Henry allegedly visited the Williamson factory so frequently to flirt with the women workers that they developed the habit of calling out 'Oh, Henry!' whenever he appeared. Whether true or not, it was the kind of story that stuck. By the late 1920s, Williamson had expanded to a large factory at 4701 W. Armitage Avenue to meet demand. The bar changed hands over the decades — passing through General Candy Corporation, Ward Foods, and Nestlé — and is currently manufactured by Ferrara Candy Company. It remains available, particularly in Canada, where it has always had an especially devoted following.
